MOE Learning Buildathon 2017

Spark the Joy of Learning

The first-ever MOE Learning Buildathon invited educators and the Singapore community to re-imagine the design of learning resources such as games, simulations, apps and other interactive resources, and co-create new resources that promote the joy of learning in our students.

We wanted to see how we might motivate our students to explore, beyond their classrooms, the online spaces and the world around them? We knew that they are already searching for educational content online – for example science videos and even user-generated Q&As.

We needed to tap into their natural curiosity and interest in the world, whilst helping to curate the online resources for them.

What new possibilities could be uncovered with new technologies for learning? Perhaps it could be the form in which the learning can be delivered. Technology may be used to deepen subject mastery and provide opportunities for development of 21st Century Competencies in our students; support inquiry-based learning and provide timely feedback on the students’ work; or enable collaborative learning and promote active learning in schools

At the MOE Learning Buildathon, we attempted to discover how we can encourage and enable learning that is fun and fulfilling in Language, STEM, and the Humanities & Arts.

challenges

How might we motivate our students to explore, beyond their classrooms, into the online spaces and the world around them? How do we harness their natural curiosity and also help curate online content for them?

What new possibilities can now be uncovered with new technologies for learning?

Technology may be used to deepen subject mastery and provide opportunities for development of 21st Century Competencies in our students, support inquiry-based learning and provide timely feedback on the students’ work, or enable collaborative learning and promote active learning in schools.

How can we encourage and enable learning that is fun and fulfilling, in the following areas?

languages

How might we spark the interest in learning and establishing strong foundations in languages, particularly the mother tongue languages?

A) Living languages – How can we encourage students to uncover and appreciate the relevance and purpose of these languages in their lives?

B) My stories – How can we leverage more contemporary themes or stories, including pop culture content, that the students can relate to?

STEM

How might we inspire our students to discover connections across Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and the applications in the world?

A) So that’s how it works – How can we help them better relate the concepts learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios?

B) Expand the “playground” – How can we encourage students to explore the application of STEM concepts to inspire and equip them with skills and mind-sets that will better prepare them for the workplace of tomorrow?

Humanities and the Arts

How might we make the Humanities – Economics, History, Geography, and Social Studies – and the Arts – art and music – a more enriching and enlivening experience for our students?

A) Bring it to life – Textbook facts, figures and concepts may seem abstract and dull in comparison to the digital world that students interact with daily. How can we leverage on technology to make the Humanities come to life, become more relatable and memorable?

B) Life imitates… – How can we enable our students to more than just learn art and music at school, but also better experience them in their everyday lives?

Integrating the Disciplines

How might we help students see connections across the subjects they study, so that learning is deepened and enriched?

A) Take the design challenge – How can we enable students to use what they have learnt from different subjects to improve the design of things around them?

B) Rethink and envision – Often, we see the world and its events through a few preferred lenses. How might our students learn to analyse the world’s problems and issues from the perspectives of different disciplines?
